Our affiliated research member Francis Mus (University of Antwerp) has taken the initiative to organize, together with colleagues from VUB and KU Leuven, a two-day conference on ‘Translation and World Literature, a Belgian Perspective’. This conference will take place in Antwerp on 13 and 14 December 2021, with Dutch, French and English as working languages. Below you will find the program.

The Faculty of Arts is internationally highly regarded for the quality of its teaching and research, and has a broad international academic network at its disposal. The Research Unit Translation Studies carries out high-quality and in-depth research in various subdisciplines of the broad field of Translation Studies, focusing on many languages and adopting a wide range of research methods. Together with the internationally reputed Centre for Translation Studies, the research unit is strongly committed to training young researchers and building international networks. A full-time tenure-track position in translation or interpreting technology is vacant in the Research Unit Translation Studies of the Faculty of Arts at KU Leuven. We seek applications from internationally oriented candidates with outstanding didactic skills and an excellent track record in research. The appointment starts on 1 October 2022.

Duties

Research

Your research fits the profile of the research group on Translation and Technology, which focuses on the use and evaluation of translation and interpreting technology (translation software, machine translation, computer-assisted interpreting and remote interpreting). The use of the various technological tools in specialised translation and during interpretation is the research focus in this group, where the efficiency of the translation and interpreting process and the quality of the translation products and interpretation services are assessed. Please note that it is recommended that your research also makes a good fit (in terms of topics and methods) with the ongoing research on language and technology at the Kulak Kortrijk campus (e.g. within ITEC, an imec research group of KU Leuven (https://itec.kuleuven-kulak.be/).
You will strive for excellence in your scholarly research: publish at the highest academic level, initiate national and international collaboration for and within the research group and help to promote and further develop such collaboration.
You are capable of obtaining competitive funding, and of attracting and supervising doctoral students.
You will see to the valorisation of your research.

Education

You will provide high-quality teaching as part of the Applied Linguistics option in the Bachelor’s programme of Linguistics and Literature at the Kulak Kortrijk Campus and in the Master’s programme of Translation and/or Interpreting at the Antwerp Campus. You will also contribute to the university’s pedagogical project by supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses.
You will develop your teaching in accordance with the KU Leuven vision on pro-active, research-based instruction and you will make use of the opportunities offered by the faculty and the university to further professionalise your teaching.
Your teaching duties, which will amount to a regular load of approximately 20 hours per week, includes the following subjects at the outset: 
For the Applied Linguistics option in the Bachelor’s programme of Linguistics and Literature:
• Vertaal- en tolkwetenschap (3 stp – ba1)• Tekstwetenschap (3stp – ba1)• Taal- en vertaaltechnologie (4 stp – ba2)• Tekstontwerp en -redactie (4 stp – ba2)
In the Master’s programmes in Translation and/or Interpreting, you will teach one or more courses (the exact nature of which is yet to be determined) in the fields of translation and/or interpreting technology.
Your teaching assignment will initially be at the faculty’s Kulak Kortrijk Campus, with a limited assignment at the Antwerp Campus. You should be prepared to carry out, where appropriate, teaching assignments at other campuses. 

Service

You are willing to take on tasks of internal and external, academic and other types of services, within the university, the faculty, the research group and the broader community. You are expected to participate in the provision of academic services and to take on managerial tasks within the faculty.

Profile

You hold a doctorate in Translation Studies (or a related field) 
You have a strong track record in research in the field of Translation Studies or in a related field.
You have demonstrable teaching skills at an academic level in the fields of translation studies and translation. Teaching experience is an asset. 
You possess organisational skills and you have a collegial mindset. You also exhibit leadership skills in a university context.
You are a team player.
The teaching duties require an immediate and thorough knowledge of Dutch, so we are looking for someone with a native or near native level of Dutch. The research profile requires a good knowledge of English in order to participate in the international scientific forum. Proficiency in other languages is recommended.

We offer full-time employment in an intellectually challenging environment. KU Leuven is a research-intensive, internationally oriented university that conducts both fundamental and applied academic research. You will be appointed to the position of tenure track assistant professor for a period of 5 years; afterwards, subject to a positive evaluation, you will be appointed to the tenured position of associate professor.
KU Leuven is well-equipped to welcome foreign professors and their families and provides practical support with regard to immigration & administration, housing, childcare, learning Dutch, partner career coaching, etc. To facilitate academic onboarding and accelerate research in the first phase, a starting grant of 100,000 euro is offered to new professors who cannot rely on substantial other funding and who are appointed for at least 50%.

Aai Prins

Aai Prins is literair vertaler uit het Russisch. Ze vertaalde tientallen boeken, waaronder klassiekers als Gogol, Tsjechov, Boelgakov en Pasternak. In 2019 werd ze bekroond met de Nederlands Letterenfonds Vertaalprijs, niet alleen voor de hoge kwaliteit van haar vertalingen, maar ook voor haar inzet als cultureel ambassadeur. 

Naast haar vertaalwerk heeft Aai Prins circa honderd recensies in de media op haar palmares, van onder meer Poesjkin, Toergenjev, Dostojevski, Tolstoj, Nabokov en Brodsky. Vanuit Sint-Petersburg, waar ze vanaf 2006 Nederlands doceerde aan de Staatsuniversiteit van Sint-Petersburg, deed ze in De Groene Amsterdammer verslag van politieke en culturele aangelegenheden.

Momenteel werkt Aai Prins aan een vertaalproject dat alle verhalen, enkele novelles en een roman van de Russische schrijver Andrej Platonov (1899-1951) omvat. Het eerste deel, Verhalen, verscheen in de zomer van 2019 in de reeks ‘Russische Bibliotheek’ van Van Oorschot. 

In het gesprek met Aai Prins zal moderator Pieter Boulogne, docent Russische literatuur aan KU Leuven, ingaan op haar visie op vertaling en bemiddelaarsrol als vertaler, cultuurspecifieke elementen en de evoluerende vertaalcultuur.
Dit evenement wordt georganiseerd door het Centrum voor Russische Studies in samenwerking met Master in het vertalen: literair traject van KU Leuven.

The CETRA family keeps growing. We’re happy to welcome Brecht de Groote as our newest affiliated research member.

Brecht de Groote is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Translation, Interpretation, and Communication of the University of Ghent. His research focuses on the Romantic period, extending into the eighteenth century and Victorian period: he investigates the ways in that British culture was shaped by practices and theories of translation and mediation, particularly as it engaged with France and Germany. He has a monograph with Edinburgh University Press, Thomas De Quincey: Romanticism in Translation.
