Bieke Nouws…

bnobtained an MA in History from the University of Antwerp in 2015, and is currently preparing a PhD on translation beliefs with regard to legal settings in 19th-century Belgium (1830-1914), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Reine Meylaerts. Central questions of this research include how translation and translators were regarded by different political stakeholders, what problems were identified in the areas of court translation and legislative translation, and how mentalities towards translation contributed to changes in legal language policies. It constitutes one of three parts of the project “Emergence and evolution of translation policies in Belgium (1830-1914): An interdisciplinary inquiry into multilingual citizenship”, aimed at assessing Belgian translation policies in the ‘Long Nineteenth Century’ from a practical, legal and ideopolitical point of view.
